Chocolate Lovers/SmARTs Evening (Smithfield Monthly Arts Stroll)
Friday, February 12, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. in Historic Downtown Smithfield
Taking place during SmARTs (Smithfield Monthly Arts Stroll), visitors can stroll the shops of downtown Smithfield and sample all the entries for free then vote for their favorites ($1 a vote – donations go directly to the local Relay for Life event) to receive the People’s Choice Award. Professional judges will also be offering cash prizes to the winners in various categories. A great Valentine date!

An exhibit of works by women, living and painting in the cities of Chesapeake, Suffolk and Portsmouth, who support and encourage one another in their development as artists. Smithfield Music presents Bonnie Bishop in concert

Bonnie's most recent album "Virginia" topped the Americana Charts nationwide and she is bringing her act back to Smithfield. The opening act will be the Carrollton Elementary School Ensemble, who will be using some of the instruments purchased with money given by Smithfield Music concert audiences.

Firehouse Bluegrass Benefit Concert

This monthly event benefits the volunteer fire/rescue service of Carrollton for purchases of needed medical supplies and firefighting/vehicle rescue equipment.

"Save Your History Day" at the Isle of Wight County Museum
February 27 from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Those with memories of Isle of Wight County are encouraged to bring photos and ephemera to the Isle of Wight County Museum. The museum will scan images for addition to the collection. Those bringing their memories to the museum will be able to return home with them. The following items are of interest to the museum: postcards, letters, pamphlets, tickets, photos of people working, relaxing or celebrating, photos of buildings, farms and livestock, memorabilia of special events.
Appointments are not necessary. No fee.

Smithfield Sprint 2010 hosted by the Luter Family YMCA
Saturday, March 27 at 10:00 a.m.
This is Event #1 of the Virginia Triathlon Series. A short pool swim, followed by a fast bike and run courses will make this race a great one for novices to check out the sport. You'll feel safe on the rural bike course and will have a semi-urban run to keep you interested during the 5K final let. Stick around for the post race BBQ all-you-can-eat! The race will benefit the Luter Family YMCA.

Civil War Preservation Trust. Park Day is an annual hands-on preservation event created by Civil War Preservation Trust to assist local groups with the maintenance of Civil War sites. With 48,000 members, CWPT is the largest non-profit battlefield preservation organization in the United States whose goal is to preserve our nation’s endangered Civil War sites and to promote appreciation of these hallowed grounds through education and heritage tourism. In exchange for their hard work, volunteers receive t-shirts and have an opportunity to hear a local historian describe the significance of the site.

Mahone’s Brigade will portray a Confederate unit while the Isle of Wight Soldier’s Aide Society will portray the civilian side of 1862. The weekend will feature drills, demonstrations, encampments and camp life. Admission for the event is free. Camps will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

The Revolutionary War comes to life during Olden Days at Windsor Castle Park. Re-enactors and living historians will demonstrate military techniques used on and off the field during the fight for American independence. Members of HM Sloop OTTER Inc. will portray the Isle of Wight County Militia to recreate the Revolutionary War through encampments, battlefield re-enactments, lectures, drill demonstrations, church services and a fashion show. Visitors can learn about the life and times of the common soldier and sailor of the time period.

Our popular summer camp for rising 4th, 5th & 6th graders returns! From the first domestication of pigs in China to the razorbacks of Isle of Wight County, learn the fascinating history of ham and understand how it put Smithfield on the world map. Students will enhance their writing skills and map skills and create their own marketing “porkfolio,” which will be exhibited in the museum. A field trip to a smokehouse is included. $100 per child includes supplies.
